What To Look for in LTL Carriers

What To Look for in LTL Carriers

If you have a smaller operation that engages in shipping, but only in relatively low volumes, Less-than-Load (LTL) shipping can be a great way to reduce your shipping costs.  With LTL shipping, you partner with a company that consolidates multiple loads from different sources onto a single truckload, allowing you to benefit from the cost savings associated with running a full truck.

However, not all LTL carriers are the same. How do you find one which will fit your business needs, while also providing savings that justify the costs? These are the things to look for.

Four Must-Haves in LTL Carriers

1 – Geographical coverage that fits your needs

Many LTL carriers are regional and may only be able to transport goods to certain areas. The larger companies are able to do nationwide shipping, often with a network of their own warehouses, but they may also cost more to contract.

Also, do they do last-mile deliveries, or are those handed off to other services? This can affect both shipment times as well as overall costs.

2 – Proper types of trucks

Not every LTL carrier has access to every type of transportation. For example, do you need refrigerated trucks for cold goods or – more rarely – items that must be kept warm? You need an LTL temp control carrier capable of handling those needs.  Ask plenty of questions to ensure their services match your business.

3 – Robust shipment tracking

The last thing you want is to hand off your shipment to a third party, and not be able to track it en route. Smart shipment tracking systems are a must so that you can keep an eye on your overall shipment status.  Also, in many cases, these systems can be redirected to a custom-facing portal so that customers can look up their own shipment status.

Consider this a must-have for modern shipping.

4 – Liability coverage

Finally, what happens if your goods are damaged in transit? Accidents do happen, and you need to know that you’ll be protected.  Never partner with an LTL shipper which doesn’t offer some level of liability coverage that prevents major loss.
